This modern hillside garden is situated on a very unique site perched on west facing hills above the east bay city of Berkeley. The views at sunset toward San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge are breathtaking.
Working with architect Craig Steely, we embarked on an extensive landscape design that embraced the complexity of a steeply sloping hillside property and the distinct functional needs of an active family of four. The completed house and surrounding landscape are united in their crisp lines and bold textures. Drifts of native shrubs and grasses bring a flowing textural backdrop to the contemporary home while drawing a connection to the natural diversity inherent in a mixed California woodland beyond.
The landscape has a deliberate dialogue with the house, upholding its contemporary geometry while playing against the challenging topography of the site.
