The Carmel Valley’s micro-climates range from extremely wet to extremely dry. On this particular south-facing ridgeline we were faced with a dry, rocky site with virtually no topsoil. The existing indigenous plants were resilient survivors in an inhospitable yet ruggedly beautiful landscape. Our challenge involved making comfortable living garden spaces close to the house. In the areas beyond, we planted thousands of native plants to embrace the existing hillside and its rugged beauty.
This landscape plan addressed large scale site planning issues as well as extensive hardscape and softscape detailing. The detailing of modern gates, fences, screens, water features, stone walls, and a range of paving details were all designed by BT+A. The softscape detailing was equally extensive and ranged thematically from elegant courtyard plantings to site-collected and propagated native edge restoration.
