This dramatic site in Franz Valley has climatic extremes, a range of topography, and spectacular views that we planned to emphasize.
From the outset, we committed to designing a landscape with straightforward materials in keeping with the local vernacular of a modern farmhouse. This refined informality would connect to a restrained palette of architectural and agricultural lines that are evident in this region. The flowing lines of designed topography and native vegetation intersect with the architecture – each being honest and logical in the visual simplicity of their patterns on the site.
We wanted people to be comfortable and grounded in their relationship with the landscape whether sitting by the pool, relaxing under the oaks and madrones, or strolling through the agrarian rows to check on the progress of grapes and olives.
